Our story

Founded on a lighting bench in Marylebone.

Brightwork started because too many beautiful London rooms were being let down by their wiring — and too many electricians treated light as an afterthought. We set out to do both jobs properly, under one roof.

The whole job, by one team.

Our founder, Mara Brightwell, spent six years designing lighting for galleries and showrooms before retraining as an electrician. She kept hitting the same wall: a designer would specify a gorgeous scheme, then hand it to a contractor who didn't quite understand the intent — and the magic leaked out somewhere between the drawing and the dimmer.

So in 2014 she founded Brightwork to close that gap. A studio where the people who plan the light are the same people who pull the cable, mount the fittings and tune the scenes. No translation losses. No finger-pointing. One team, accountable end to end.

Twelve years on, we're a tight crew of registered electricians and lighting designers working out of a railway arch by Camden Lock. We still take on the single dimmer and the dead socket — but our favourite days are the ones where a whole floor of a Georgian terrace switches on for the first time and the room finally feels the way the owner always imagined it could.

What we stand for

Four things we never cut.

Safety, no shortcuts

Every circuit is tested, certified and notified. If we wouldn't sign it off in our own home, it doesn't leave yours.

Light with intent

We design for how a space feels, not just how bright it is. Every fitting earns its place in the scheme.

Clean as we go

Dust sheets down, cables chased neatly, mess taken with us. You should barely know we were there — until the lights come on.

Plain answers

No jargon, no scare tactics, no padded quotes. We tell you what matters, what can wait, and what it costs.

The crew

The people on the tools.

Small studio, senior hands. The person who quotes your job is the person who turns up to do it.
