Our story

Same arches.
Since 1947.

Ironside wasn't founded by a brand consultant. It was founded by a docker with cut hands and a back room full of borrowed kit. Three generations later, we're still here — and we still measure success the same way: did you leave better than you arrived?

In 1947, with the docks winding down and the East End rebuilding, a Bethnal Green stevedore named Bill Hartrey hung a heavy bag in a derelict railway arch on Pollard Row and started teaching local lads to box. He called it Ironside — after the ships he'd unloaded, and the kind of men he wanted to build.

For nearly eight decades, the gym has never moved. It survived slum clearances, three recessions and the fitness fads that came and went around it. Bill's granddaughter runs it now, and the same brass bell he salvaged from a scrapped trawler still rings the rounds.

We've sent fighters to national finals and beginners to their first sparring session. We've turned nervous office workers into people who can hold their own in a ring. What hasn't changed is the promise: real coaching, no judgement, and a community that has your back from the first jab.

What we stand for

The Ironside code

No ego at the door

Everyone starts somewhere. Champions and complete beginners train under the same roof, and the only person you're competing with is yesterday's you.

Coaching, not babysitting

Our coaches watch every round and every rep. You'll get honest feedback and a plan that progresses — not a playlist and a shrug.

Community over clout

This is a members' club, not a turnstile. People know your name, notice when you're missing, and turn up to cheer when you fight.

Earn the bell

Nothing here is handed out. Progress is earned round by round, rep by rep — and that's exactly why it sticks.
